Where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo 2016

Cinco de Mayo comes but once a year where the city goes crazy for tequila and tacos (May 5th actually commemorates the Mexican army victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862).

There are a number of big events happening around town where you can indulge in your love of Mexican food and drinks, but here are five you may not know about:

Maizal Quesadilla Cafe

133 Jefferson Ave.
Toronto, ON

Maizal Quesailla Café will be open on Thursday from 11am to 11pm with drinks, live music and a strictly taco menu for the special occasion. And yes, that includes their famous fish tacos.

p.s. Cool fact - the tortillas at Maizal are made from scratch, following indigenous techniques that have been passed down through generations.

Mambo Lounge

120 Danforth Ave.
Toronto, ON

Cuban restaurant Mambo Lounge gets in on the celebrations with an El Jimador tequila sampling, $5 margaritas, live mariachi band, and prizes including an El Jimador prize pack and tickets to both a Toronto Football Club game and Toronto Jays game.

The Addisons Residence

456 Wellington St. W.
Toronto, ON

Looking for a more relaxed vibe? Chill out at The Addisons Residence.

While sombreros,  specialty cocktails and $4 drinks from 5-10pm are on tap for the evening, unexpected festivities include board games and late night pizza.

Chacho's Fine Mexican Dining

234 Merton St
Toronto, ON

Chacho’s Fine Dining Mexican Restaurant is tucked away on Merton Street near Mount Pleasant and Davisville.

This Thursday they're offering a host of specials, including half-price traditional Margarita Pitchers, Chiles en Nogada and Tres Leches cake.
