Open/Closed: Toronto Restaurant News January 31- February 6, 2019

With the extreme cold and epic storms this week, things have slowed down slightly with respect to openings. But don’t get too comfy – a multitude of restos are slated to launch next week.

And there’s still closings, news and events to catch up on.

Here’s the very latest:

OPEN

The Alpine (2872 Dundas St. W.) debuts tomorrow. The new “craft beer cabin” in The Junction will have two Alpine signature brews to start, including Alpine Hefe (5.2% ABV, 11 IBU): “Expect classic German wheat beer flavours of banana and clove from this medium-bodied beer that pours with a rocky head and finishes with a slight tang.”

Dupont just got its own Bespoke Butchers (215 Madison Ave.), with another soon to follow on Queen West. Stay tuned.

The Daily Dumpling Wonton Company (792 College St.) lands just in time for Lunar New Year celebrations with handmade Shanghainese wontons, available fresh or frozen.

Today marks the first day for Farm Boy (1015 Lake Shore Blvd.) at Leslie and Lakeshore, just south of Leslieville in the Studio District.

The Green Goose (5165 Dixie Rd.) in Mississauga offers Irish Nachos ($12.99), Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding ($10.99), and Bangers & Mash ($12.99) amongst the usual roster of burgers, sandwiches and entrées.

Doors opened last night for The Wave Bar & Lounge (285 Enfield Pl.), right near Square One. On the menu: Organic Chicken Supreme ($22), Haddock Fish and Chips ($17) and Mac & Cheese ($21) with homemade cheesy lobster sauce, chunks of lobster meat, and fresh parsley.

CLOSED

J’s Apron Brunch Cafe (96 Harbord St.) opened last August with Osaka and Western fare, but shuttered earlier this week.

Lou Dawg’s Ryerson (76 Gerrard St. E.) has closed due to a massive rent increase. You can visit their other locations outside of the city in Hamilton, London and Waterloo. In the works: more spots across Ontario (Guelph, Kingston, and North Bay) and the rest of the country (Alberta and the East Coast).

Buzzy French tacos lasted a year-and-a-half on the Danforth at Mister Frenchy (675 Danforth Ave.). They’ll find a new home in Toronto, Montreal, or both - the company ne peux pas decider.

Maison Fou (791 Dundas St. W.) didn’t find success after making the move to Dundas West from Bloor West Village last summer. Despite the dining room still set up, the restaurant has closed.

EVENTS

While Winterlicious is in full effect, there are some other great prix fixe menus to check out.

This weekend, warm up at the Toronto Tea Festival.

Super Bowl LIII events will be happening across the GTA this Sunday, but Black Lab Brewing’s Snooperbowl may be the only one where you can bring Rover.

The Winter Chocolate Show takes place Saturday.
